Alejandra’s journey in STEM
Today, on International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we’re proud to recognize the women across our organization who work in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). One of those inspiring leaders is Alejandra Pena Villarroel, a Project Manager in our Corporate Engineering department at our Dieppe, N.B. headquarters.
Alejandra leads automation and electrical upgrades at our manufacturing plants. Her work blends detailed engineering expertise with project management, budgeting, commissioning, safety compliance and stakeholder communication.
Creativity, problem solving and real-world impact are what first drew Alejandra to STEM.
“Electrical systems and technology felt like fun puzzles to solve,” she said. “I thrive on challenges that push me to think differently.”
Alejandra’s journey hasn’t been without challenges.
“In the past, I have been underestimated as a young woman in engineering,” she said. “I’ve grown through these moments and learned to let my work speak for itself. By showing up prepared, consistent and committed, I’ve demonstrated that neither my age nor gender defines my ability.”
Alejandra highlights the importance of early exposure to STEM.
“I worked as a STEM instructor for middle school girls across New Brunswick,” she said. “Introducing girls to STEM at a young age helps remove the fear or uncertainty that can develop later. It empowers them to feel confident, curious and motivated to pursue these fields.”
For young women considering a career in STEM, Alejandra offers this advice: “Work hard, believe in your abilities and never let stereotypes limit what you can achieve. Don’t be afraid to try, fail, try again and never stop learning.”
Today, we celebrate Alejandra and all the women whose work in STEM helps shape a more inclusive and innovative future.
