$47,250 Awarded in Tree Planter Scholarships

Since 2010, J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) has awarded scholarships to tree planters who are starting or returning to school the following year. To date, $454,500 has been awarded to full-time students who have planted trees across JDI-owned or managed lands. The 2017 season had 58 students awarded a total of $47,250.

 

Biodiversity in New Brunswick - Bryophytes

Bryophytes are moss or ground vegetation that grows in our forests. Growth of bryophytes in the forest is evidence of a healthy and growing forest. J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) is teamed up with Université de Quebec en Abitibi Témiscamingue to sample and monitor the growth of bryophytes on JDI's freehold land. The study involves sampling every bryophyte species that are found within a designated area, which will determine favorable stands for bryophyte growth.

Irving Consumer Products broke ground on the construction of their new $400 million state-of-the-art tissue plant in Macon, Georgia today at an event at the site of their future home. Joined by Mayor Robert Reichert and Charlie Gatlin, Special Projects Advisor for Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD), President Robert K. Irving acknowledged the next step in the construction of the new facility. 

 

JDI Woodlands provides $23,000 in Scholarships to Employees Children

This year, 23 students whose parents work for JDI’s Woodlands Division, were awarded with scholarships to go toward their post-secondary education. Earlier last month, U.S. Senator Susan Collins announced a $7.89 Million grant for a project to improve rail infrastructure in Northeastern Maine. NBM Rail Services has been awarded the contract to repair and upgrade 22 rail bridges on the Madawaska Subdivision of the Maine Northern Railway.

Two teams of members of the Canadian Navy Frigate HMCS Fredericton cycled around New Brunswick this August making fundraising stops in support of the Children’s Wish Foundation. All proceeds from the tour go towards supporting the wishes of children diagnosed with high risk, life threatening illnesses, and severe neurological or genetic conditions in New Brunswick.

Macon, Georgia – Irving Consumer Products is pleased to announce the expansion of its United States business operations with the construction of a new $400 million state-of-the-art tissue plant in Macon, Georgia. The new plant will create over 200 jobs and allow the company to double its ThruAir Dry capacity, increasing it by 75,000 tonnes, the equivalent of 15 million cases.

Lake Utopia Paper, Limited (LUP) recently completed their annual seven-day shut down for scheduled maintenance and the installation of new equipment to improve efficiency and increase production. Nearly 400 local contractors were on site from 37 different companies. They worked together with the team of nearly 140 staff and hourly LUP employees to get the job done.

Sandra Mae Watling is a second year Forestry student at the University of New Brunswick's Fredericton campus. This summer she is one of the 110 students working in J.D. Irving, Limited’s (JDI) tree planting operations. Sandra Mae is a tree planting auditor, following behind the planting crew to ensure that all trees are planted to a quality standard. The nine auditors across the company are looking for quality indicators as they check their plots. Indicators include ensuring that seedlings are spaced appropriately, planted at the correct depth and that seedlings aren’t damaged or leaning.

J.D. Irving, Limited’s Ashland Sawmill in Northern Maine has expanded its operations with the construction of a new dry kiln. The $1.7 million dollar project was completed earlier this year as the company continues to invest in its state-of-the-art $30+ million dollar sawmill which was completed in 2014. The new kiln will mean more production and more jobs for the Northern Maine community.

Thirty-one educators from PEI, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick spent three days touring JDI forestry operations in central New Brunswick.

The sun was shining for the 200 excited children and their chaperones, volunteers, fans, and families from schools and businesses all around the Saint John area. 31 competitors each had a loyal 5-person pit crew who were all excited to get their vehicles across the finish line in the 5th Annual Saint John Soap Box Derby, presented by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (APEGNB) Saint John Branch. The Derby is a key source of funding for the “PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools) in the Park Program” hosted in partnership with the Lily Lake Pavilion, PALS, and Anglophone School District – South. In total approximately 1400-1600 students participate in the “PALS in the Park” program each year.

This international event celebrates the trucking industry while also raising funds for Special Olympics athletes. HALIFAX, NS: In October 2014 Irving Shipbuilding was asked by the Royal Canadian Navy to propose an interim refueling and resupply capability. We assembled an international team of naval and commercial shipping experts to tackle the problem. This included my own experience as a former Vice Admiral in the United States Navy responsible for all ship design, construction, maintenance and conversion in a Navy of almost 300 ships and submarines.

MEOPAR is calling on researchers across Canada to submit a proposal for our Fourth Call for Research Proposals. Irving Shipbuilding is generously contributing $1 million of this $1.5 million call. Irving Shipbuilding’s funding is pursuant to its Value Proposition obligation under the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy, whereby Irving Shipbuilding is committed to spending 0.5% of contract revenues with the aim of creating a sustainable marine industry across Canada.  This Fourth Call will fund a number of multi-year projects that align with MEOPAR’s overall goal of improving Canada’s ability to observe, predict, and respond to marine hazards.

100 tree planters, 60 minutes, over 53,000 seedlings planted.  It takes a great team to break a world record and that is what the J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) crew did near Sussex on May 20th, 2015.  The previous Guinness World Record of trees planted in one hour was set in 2012 in India where 40,000 trees were planted.

Irving Pulp and Paper Awards Five Contracts in April as part of Pulp Mill Modernization in Saint John as Company Delivers on Forest Sector Investments Across New Brunswick

SAINT JOHN, N.B.: Irving Pulp & Paper is pleased to announce five new contracts for Saint John businesses, totaling over $640,000.  The contracts are part of the 24-month Phase 2 modernization of the west side pulp mill at Reversing Falls.  The pulp mill investment is the largest in Canada since 1993 and is focused on installing a new digester to replace the existing 14 digesters, as well as new wood chip handling and screening.  The estimated 609,000 person hours for this project is equivalent to 300 direct construction jobs and 150 indirect construction jobs.  Upon completion in Q1 2016, the mill will achieve reduced air and noise emissions as well as improved operating efficiencies. Engineering for Phase 3 – a $250 million investment – is currently underway.

Installation of a new 25-tonne crane has begun in the new assembly building – the “Ultra Hall” - at Halifax Shipyard.  The new crane has a span of 56 meters, is faster, and capable of lifting smaller pieces.   It arrived at the Port of Halifax’s Richmond Terminal on Tuesday, March 10, and was delivered to the shipyard by Mills Heavy hauling of Halifax.  Installation of the new crane is expected to take approximately three weeks.

Another milestone has been reached for Irving Shipbuilding's Ultra Hall Production Building, which is under construction at Halifax Shipyard.  On November 4, 2014, video camera drones captured the first day of installation of two new bridge cranes, which will be used to lift large blocks and mega modules during ship assembly. Each crane will lift up to 200 tonnes.

Since the ground breaking earlier this fall, 227 truckloads of concrete have been delivered to the Grand Lake Timber Expansion Project in Chipman, NB.  So far, 1,645 cubic metres of concrete have been poured by Econocrete of Fredericton as the foundations for the new production line take shape. The $23 million project includes a new mill infeed, a new debarker, stud line, and trimmer, as well as new stackers for the lumber.

The Honourable Rob Nicholson, PC, QC, MP for Niagara Falls and Minister of National Defence, today announced the successful modernization of the first four Halifax-Class frigates. The Halifax-class modernization/frigate life extension (HCM/FELEX) is a $4.3 billion program to upgrade and enhance the existing fleet. ARC Towage, Atlantic Towing's joint venture, signed contracts with Netherlands shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group in July 2013 to build four tugboats.  The new building contracts are the result of a special joint venture established to provide gas terminal berthing services for a significant energy industry player in Trinidad and Tobago.  The first Tug, an ASD (Azimuth Stern Drive) 2810, arrived in Trinidad earlier this month, while the second vessel is expected to arrive the first week of November.

Today Irving Forest Products marked the official opening of the new state-of-the-art Ashland Sawmill in Nashville Plantation, Maine. During the construction phase, over 84 Maine businesses provided in excess of $17 million in goods and services to the project, employing over 50 people on site during peak construction.

Halifax, NS:  The ninth and final Canadian Coast Guard Hero-Class Patrol Vessel, also known as a Mid-shore Patrol Vessel, was launched the morning of Saturday, May 17th from Halifax Shipyard in honour of Captain Nichola Kathleen Sarah Goddard (May 2, 1980 - May 17, 2006). Each of the nine vessels in the program was named after fallen personnel from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canadian Coast Guard, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and Canadian Forces who performed heroic acts during their service.

The facility will be operated by Maritime Innovation Limited, a division of JDI.  Building of the 7200-square-foot facility will begin in late May and will generate 36 direct and indirect construction jobs. Once completed, the new laboratory will create two new jobs over the next two years (in addition to the current three) and at least five additional jobs over the next four to five years.  The new facility is part of a more than $5 million investment initiated in 2011 to commercialize new tree improvement techniques.  Included in this total is a direct investment of $2.1 million by the company.

Atlantic Towing Limited (ATL) announced today that it has secured a new ten (10)-year firm contract, plus a total of 15 years of options at the Charterers’ discretion, with ExxonMobil Canada Properties and Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd. (HMDC) for four new state-of-the-art Platform Supply Vessels operating out of St John’s, NL.  The first ships for the contract will be delivered in 2016 and will join Atlantic Towing’s current fleet of eight offshore support vessels in Atlantic Canada.  The new contract means 100 new jobs at Atlantic Towing’s offshore fleet home port of St. John’s, NL.

Irving Pulp & Paper will invest $450 million in a two-phased modernization program of the west side pulp mill.  It is the largest investment in a pulp mill in Canada since 1993.  The project will generate 1.2 million in person hours of construction work over two phases – equivalent to a total of 600 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs.  The pulp mill investment involves no provincial or federal government funding.

The Atlantic Willow, a tugboat owned by Atlantic Towing, will be at Shelburne Ship Repair during the fall season for routine drydocking work.  A couple of additional commercial projects will also keep the skilled tradespeople at Shelburne Ship Repair busy this season. All three projects will require a total of up to 60 tradespeople to complete. The Atlantic Willow, built by Irving Shipbuilding at its East Isle Shipyard location in PEI, was commissioned in 1998. "We're continuing to aggressively bid on commercial and repair projects for all of our facilities," said Kevin McCoy, President of Irving Shipbuilding.  "We'll work hard to secure work for all of our locations to help us maintain more of our skilled trades people here within our workforce," McCoy said.

Shelburne Ship Repair has landed a contract that will employ 40 people over the next several weeks.  The refurbished and modernized yard welcomed the CCGS Ann Harvey to its Marine Railway on Friday, July 5.  The vessel is in for its routine annual maintenance and repairs.  Twenty-four additional people will be hired to complete the job.

Halifax, NS – The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has announced the largest private conservation project ever in Atlantic Canada. NCC has acquired 5,077 acres (2,055 hectares) of significant habitat in the Tusket River Headwaters area of Digby County, Nova Scotia.  A news conference was held today with funding partners to help celebrate this major  achievement.

 

Atlantic Towing Limited Purchases New Offshore Vessel – Atlantic Merlin

Atlantic Towing, Limited (ATL) has purchased a new state-of-the-art Anchor Handling Offshore Supply vessel from JAYA, and is expected to take delivery of the vessel during the first quarter of 2014.  Atlantic Merlin will generate twenty-four new jobs to crew the new ship.

 

Eastern Maine Railway Purchases Madawaska-Van Buren Track from Montreal Maine and Atlantic Railway

Eastern Maine Railway (EMR) - operator of Maine Northern Railway - has completed an agreement to purchase the 28 mile line between Madawaska and Van Buren (known as the Van Buren Subdivision) from the Montreal Maine and Atlantic (MMA) Railway.  All regulatory approvals are in place and the transaction closed yesterday afternoon (June 10, 2013).  The purchase also includes acquisition of the international bridge that crosses into Canada to St. Leonard, with connections to the CN line.

Halifax NS -- More than 530 potential suppliers from across Canada gathered in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 for Irving Shipbuilding’s AOPS Supplier Development Session.  Invitations were sent to the almost 2,000 companies included on Irving Shipbuilding’s online supplier registry with the goal of ensuring potential suppliers were informed of business opportunities within the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) Program, the first set of combat vessels to be built under the federal government’s National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS).

Two classes of grade one students helped plant three hardwood trees on the school grounds at 118 Brunswick Street. Their fellow grade one students across the Anglophone South School District also spent some class time this week learning about the value of planting trees.

Irving Paper has a new target to beat in 2013 as it ends 2012 with record-breaking production.  The team of over 300 employees pulled together to make 408,214 tonnes of quality specialty grade paper.  While production has increased, the team has worked hard to reduce the mill’s impact on the environment.
