Atlantic Towing (ATL) established this scholarship not only to promote post-secondary education and marine careers, but also to strengthen their commitment as an employer of choice on campus at the Marine Institute.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be given each year: a nautical science student will be awarded a scholarship in the fall, and a marine engineering student will be awarded one in the winter. To be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must have completed a successful work term with ATL and have solid academic standing.
Recipient Tevin Plummer from Jamaica worked as a navigation cadet with Atlantic Towing this past summer on the Atlantic Kestrel. “It was a great hands-on learning experience. I felt a real part of the team who were very supportive. My longer-term goal is to work for Atlantic Towing and to work offshore,” he said.
“Partnerships such as this are a win-win for the student, the Institute and the company, said Melissa Flynn, a placement officer with the Fisheries and Marine Institute. “We share a commitment to first class training and experiential learning experiences that culminate in rewarding career opportunities to skilled graduates. We look forward to continuing and strengthening our relationship with Atlantic Towing, Limited in the years ahead.”
Sean Leet, General Manager of Atlantic Towing, says the company is proud of their ongoing partnership with the Marine Institute. “The Marine Institute cadets we employ each year continue to surpass our expectations. The cadets provide Atlantic Towing’s offshore business sector with an industry-leading team of seafarers to operate our growing fleet,” said Leet. “With almost 200 Newfoundland and Labrador-based seafarers, Atlantic Towing is proud to call St. John’s home port to our offshore fleet and the Marine Institute a strategic partner.”
In the last three years, 30 cadets from the Marine Institute have secured full-time jobs with Atlantic Towing. In the next three years, Atlantic Towing expects to hire an additional 60 cadets.
