Each school term J.D. Irving, Limited gives a number of students the opportunity to experience first-hand what a career might look like in their respective fields of study. This winter, 82 Co-op students spanning across multiple divisions joined the JDI team, representing 12 universities and colleges. Another 650 student hires are forecasted to join JDI operations before the end of 2017. 

As part of this enriching experience, 42 students working in Saint John were given the chance to tour two JDI facilities last month. Visiting Atlantic Wallboard in the morning followed by RST in the afternoon, these students learned the ins and outs of two very different, but equally important, components of the company. 

Accompanied by Meagan Baxter, Recruitment Coordinator, the students' tour began with a safety briefing within one of Atlantic Wallboard’s conference rooms. After dividing into four separate groups, students toured the operations floor, getting an up-close and personal view of what goes into the production of wallboard; a critical building-block in many construction projects. 

"One could not help but be impressed by the skill of the AWL team and sheer scale of the facility." says Josh McIntyre, Social and Digital Marketing Co-op Student with the HR team. 

After completing the first segment of the tour, students set course for RST headquarters. Vanessa Trindade was a part of the RST team who welcomed the student tour. "We wanted to give the students a broad idea of what they could be a part of, and what trucking has to offer." says Vanessa. The tour included an afternoon of informative workshops, office tours, and a fun nail-bitingly close team game about the operations.

The goal of such a tour is that students gain a deeper appreciation for other divisions within the company and that they are more easily able to envision the types of opportunities that are waiting for them after graduation.
