Last summer, Pedro Neto and his wife made the move from the shores of Aracaju, Brazil to Regina, Saskatchewan. Almost immediately after arriving in Canada, Pedro received a job offer from Harbour Development and relocated from the prairies to Saint John. 

Pedro is one of several JDI employees who have brought their specialized skillsets to the company and acquired their permanent residency in recent months. 

Pedro studied engineering in Brazil and then Maritime Management in Norway. He's now working as a Vessel Operations Specialist at Harbour Development. 

The ocean has been a constant in Pedro’s life, from his upbringing in Aracaju to his studies in Norway — and this makes him feel at home on the east coast. “My sense of direction is totally based on the water,” he said. “That’s why I work with vessels.” 

Satya Geetha Sri Dulam moved here from Andhra, India two years ago and started at Atlantic Towing as a Business Systems Analyst while working towards her M.B.A. at the University of New Brunswick. 

“It was intimidating in the start because I was alone and didn’t know anyone, but after coming here, the people are so welcoming,” said Satya. She found the process of acquiring her permanent residency long but smooth given the help she received from the Human Resources team at JDI.

Danilo Ramos Meirelles, a truck shop technician at Universal Truck and Trailer, said the move from Brasilia has been wonderful for him and his family. “So far for me and my family, it’s the best thing that we’ve ever done.” Danilo said his family especially loved seeing snow over the winter. 

For Satya, she said it was just a matter of getting started. “For immigrants like me, we might not know where to go, but the important thing is to just start here, and you’ll always find someone to come and help you.”
