Engineering the future: Demi Adeoye gains experience at Harbour Development
During his work term with Harbour Development, Demi Adeoye, an operations assistant student, is gaining hands-on experience in administrative and marine operations.
These are valuable skills for Demi, who is pursuing a mechanical engineering degree at the University of New Brunswick with a specialization in mechatronics.
“While the name may sound complex, it essentially means I get to delve deeper into electrical systems, coding and autonomous technologies," he said of his specialization. "It’s an area I’m very passionate about."
Demi's summer work term is also allowing him to delve deeper as he builds skills and applies learnings while contributing to two major projects with real impact.
So far, Demi has played an important role in the implementation of two key systems that strengthen maintenance, compliance and crew training while supporting employee development and career progression.
“The highlight of my experience so far has been the people,” Demi said.
Through his experience, Demi has broadened his technical knowledge and strengthened the communication, collaboration and leadership skills needed to contribute effectively in a professional environment.
This extends outside of work and the classroom as well, where Demi has been active in student leadership and volunteer roles, including the Engineering Undergraduate Society, the Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Society and the Let's Talk Science program, which helps youth experience the possibilities of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields.
“Being involved in university organizations and volunteering gave me the confidence to step into leadership opportunities in my work term, like leading the Harbour Development student tour," Demi said. "It really reinforced how the skills you build outside the classroom can carry directly into a professional setting.”
