Gaming to computer science: ChiSeng’s journey
For ChiSeng Cheang, a data analyst student with Universal Truck and Trailer (UTT), the countless hours spent playing video games as a child growing up in Malaysia weren’t just entertainment. They became the gateway to learning English, building friendships and, eventually, a move to Canada to study computer science.
ChiSeng is now turning his love for video games into a career in data analytics. Moving to Canada to study at the University of New Brunswick felt like a natural choice for his post-secondary education as many of his gaming friends lived in Canada. What began as a simple wish to experience snow and Canadian winters has turned into a new chapter of life. Since August 2023, ChiSeng has proudly called New Brunswick home.
In his current role at UTT, ChiSeng works on projects that involve analyzing datasets to uncover insights. A typical project can span two weeks or more, requiring focus and precision.
Hands-on experience isn’t the only thing ChiSeng gained during his co-op experience. He has also strengthened his time management abilities while taking advantage of professional development opportunities available to J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) employees. ChiSeng is using these resources to prepare for his Power BI Data Analyst Associate Certification, setting himself up for success in future work terms and beyond.
One of the biggest surprises for ChiSeng has been discovering the complexity behind UTT’s operations.
“Transport trucks are much larger than they appear at first glance. Usually, we only see them on highways or delivering items to supermarkets, but there is a lot of maintenance work going on behind the scene,” ChiSeng said. “Even a simple part like a filter must go through multiple countries to be manufactured and then bought through a supplier before it even reaches our dealership [UTT].”
Looking forward, ChiSeng is excited to apply his growing knowledge and skills to future roles. For students considering a co-op with JDI, ChiSeng highlights the importances of positive reflection.
"Don’t compare yourself to other people — look at where you were one semester ago,” he said.
ChiSeng’s story is a great example of how curiosity and determination can turn a passion into a career path. From gaming to data analytics, his journey shows that every experience can lead to something bigger.
