Irving Woodlands employee takes home silver in Skills Canada National Competition

Nick Galloway, a heavy equipment technician with Irving Woodlands, is a provincial gold medalist and national silver medalist in skilled trades.

Competing in the Heavy Vehicle Technology category at the Skills New Brunswick and Skills Canada National competitions, Galloway outperformed his fellow competitors across a variety of tasks that tested his speed and accuracy of vehicle troubleshooting, communication skills and demonstration of safety and method.

"I saw it as a valuable opportunity to showcase and apply the skills I've acquired over the years and to gain hands-on experience in specialty repairs," Galloway said. "Hearing my name called for Gold at the end of the provincial competition, and Silver for nationals, was an amazing feeling."

Galloway credits his three years with Irving Woodlands with keeping his skills sharp.

"My time here has allowed me to work on a vast amount of equipment," he said. "One day you could be working on a lawnmower and the next it could be a million-dollar grader."

Galloway said he was grateful for the support of his apprenticeship officer who encouraged him to participate in the competitions.

Skills Canada NB took place in Miramichi at the forestry centre at the end of May. Skills Canada Nationals were held at the end of May in Quebec City. More than 500 competitors from across Canada came to compete in 40 skilled trades areas.
