Pius Botti, Hired Before Grad!
Pius Botti, a recent graduate of the Mechanical Engineering program at the University of New Brunswick Fredericton, secured a full-time position with PumpsPlus, a J.D. Irving, Limited company, months before completing his degree.
His journey with the company began in 2022 and has spanned three years as he explored a variety of roles and divisions within the company. From his early involvement as a student in the Pulp and Paper Division to his time as a Student Ambassador with the Construction & Equipment Division, Pius consistently sought out opportunities to learn and grow. Now, as a full-time Application Engineer with PumpsPlus, he continues to build on that foundation.
“Getting hired before graduation with PumpsPlus was a truly meaningful opportunity, and I’m genuinely grateful for it,” he said. “It gave me a sense of stability and direction during a time when many students are juggling final projects, exams, and the uncertainty of what comes next.”
Before joining JDI, Pius worked as a cashier at a department store and held two positions with UNB’s Department of Residence Services. On campus, he served as Events Director for the Engineering Undergraduate Society and helped organize the 47th Mechanical Engineering Coaster Derby.
Reflecting on his early start with JDI, he emphasized the importance of mentorship and a willingness to learn. “Starting early gave me more networking opportunities and the confidence to say, ‘I don’t know, but I can figure it out.’ That mindset has been key,” he said.
When asked what he is most proud of in his career so far, Pius pointed to his time as a Student Ambassador. “The thing I’m most proud of would be serving as a Student Ambassador,” he said. “Honestly, I loved the opportunity to represent the Construction & Equipment Division. It wasn’t just about promoting the company—it was about sharing my experience, connecting with other students, and showing them what’s possible when you take initiative and get involved. It really helped me grow both personally and professionally.”
Looking ahead, Pius is focused on achieving his Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) certification, expanding his knowledge of pump design, and continuing his education. He offered advice to future JDI team members, drawing from the mentorship he has received. “Bring a great attitude and a strong work ethic—the rest can be taught,” he said.
With a strong start to his career and a clear vision for the future, Pius is showing that with the right mindset and support, success can begin even before graduation day.
