Safety Trending Upward at CFM

Custom Fabricators & Machinists (CFM) is excited to announce that it has achieved two huge safety milestones: achieving 1,000 days without a lost-time incident and exceeding 400 days without a recordable workplace safety incident — and quickly approaching 500. This achievement follows the company surpassing two years without a lost-time incident in 2022.

Worksite safety has been steadily trending upward at CFM. What has been the secret to its collective success? CFM has enshrined measurable safety targets in its annual goals and has laser-focused its efforts on a proactive approach to eliminating risks in the workplace.

The Hazard ID program is an integral part of the safety strategy at CFM, wherein employees formally identify potential problems before starting jobs.

“Ultimately, what we are after is an ‘if you see something, say something’ mindset,” explained Vanessa LeBlanc, Safety Advisor at CFM.

“By sending workers into the field to look for hazards every day, we’re sending them out to look for hazards to control. In turn, this reduces the likelihood of encountering hazards on the worksite that could lead to injuries."

The Hazard ID program has been a hit among CFM employees. The company achieved over one-third of its annual target by the end of March.

Safety requires leadership at all levels of an organization from the ground up. At CFM, everyone shares this responsibility equally. The team often works in a variety of manufacturing, repair and overhaul, technical services, and more in challenging industrial settings and situations — where safety is paramount. Here, prevention goes a long way in eliminating unsafe behaviors and hazards before they result in incidents.

"Proactively identifying hazards and measuring safety is helping us achieve these impressive safety milestones and avoid incidents that lead to injuries at work," said Jenna Hazelton, the General Manager of CFM, praising her team.

Hazelton said that performing work successfully and without incident proves that the company is heading in the right direction regarding safety.
