Careers in Motion: Our Student Experiences - Alex Kerr

Alex Kerr is a fifth year student at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a Technology, Management, and Entrepreneurship (TME) Diploma with a minor in Math. Alex is in her second work term with the Careers in Motion program. This summer she is working with the Divisional Business Improvement Team as a Business Improvement Analyst. She has previously spent time as an Operations Assistant with RST Sunbury Transport. During her free time, Alex enjoys playing volleyball and spent two seasons playing with the UNBSJ Seawolves Varsity team. We spoke to Alex to learn more about her CIM experience.

Why did you choose the Careers in Motion program?

"I wanted to be somewhere where there was an opportunity to explore different roles and figure out what I was most passionate about. From speaking with past Careers in Motion students and learning that they encourage their students to move around throughout their summer terms and their new grad program, it felt like the best fit to have the opportunities I was looking for."

What about JDI resonates with you?

"What resonates with me is that they care about their employees. JDI extends so many resources to their employees to better their experience with the company whether it is with numerous training opportunities they offer, wellness programs or social events, JDI invests in their people."

How has your new role with the Business Improvement team helped you grow?

"In the short time I’ve been with the Business Improvement team, many of my technical skills have improved but, the biggest impact has been the soft skills. Being a part of the Business Improvement team has pushed me to focus on my interpersonal skills in areas such as running meetings, change management, etc. to become a better well-rounded employee."

What’s one thing you’d like to highlight about your time with JDI?

"Cavendish Fry truck ðŸ˜Š"

Alex is enjoying her summer work term; she is currently working towards her Lean Sigma Six Yellow Belt. She plans to return to UNB in the fall and finish her degree in May 2024.
