Third-generation railroader reflects on 46 years at the railway

For 46 years, Gerard (Gerry) Roy has not only witnessed the evolution of the New Brunswick Maine Railway, but has also carried forward a family legacy that spans four generations.

Gerry’s grandfather, a conductor at the railway, passed away when Gerry was young – leaving him with a treasured railroad pocket watch. In 1979, Gerry started at the railway, following in the footsteps of his father who worked as a track foreman. He then moved over to the Maintenance of Way team, where he learned the ropes of keeping the tracks in top condition. Over the decades, Gerry's dedication and expertise have led him to roles as a conductor, engineman and now as an Operations Supervisor.

Gerry’s favourite part of the job is working with the new generations of railroaders. “I enjoy working with the younger generations and passing on my knowledge and experience to other members of the team.” He says with a smile. “It’s nice seeing them grow up."

In his free time, Gerry values moments spent with his partner, children, dogs and 10 grandchildren – one of whom he has passed along his cherished railroad pocket watch to. Just over 10 years ago, Gerry's stepson started at the railway as a Rail Traffic Controller. "He gives 110 percent, he's a railroader at heart."

As Gerry reflects on his 46 years at the railway, he remains grateful for the sense of community and the legacy he continues to uphold.
