A Q&A with Kersti Lee: Careers in Motion Summer Student Experience

Over the next year, JDI forecast over 650 student hires across operations. One of the students joining the team this summer is third year University of New Brunswick Fredericton Civil Engineering student, Kersti Lee. When Kersti's exams wrap up this April, she will begin her third summer with New Brunswick Southern Rail on the West side of Saint John.

We caught up with Kersti for a Q&A about the Careers in Motion Logistics Development Program.

The Careers in Motion program offers students and new grads the opportunity to discover careers in the transportation industry while enhancing their leadership skills. As an engineering student, what interests you about the transportation division?

“As a civil engineering student, I have found it invaluable to gain hands-on experience in the transportation division for many reasons. For one, it is very possible that my future career will involve the transportation industry in one capacity or another. I have also found that my work terms have not only allowed me to use, and therefore solidify, many concepts that I've previously learned in school, but they have also given me a practical reference when new material is introduced.”.

What did you enjoy about your last two summers in the Careers in Motion Program? Why are you returning for a third summer?

“I enjoyed the opportunity to work with new technology at JDI because I felt my skills were being put to good use and I contributed positively to a team. I consider myself fortunate to have expanded my understanding of the technological side of civil engineering.”

Would you recommend the program to undergrad students?

“I would recommend a student experience with JDI because the work is both challenging and rewarding. The environment is one that fosters learning and welcomes the contributions that students can bring to the table.”
