Careers in Motion: JDI Summer Student Program Sees Largest Cohort Yet

Last week, JDI’s Transportation and Logistics Division welcomed 14 post-secondary students across 8 businesses as part of its Careers in Motion program. Over the next four months, these students will participate in and – in some cases – lead projects relating to all aspects of the businesses, spanning fleet management, new technologies, data visualization, process mapping, sales and marketing, and much more!

This year’s Careers in Motion (CIM) students hail from five universities and seven different degree programs, largely concentrated in the business and engineering fields. Already, the group has expressed interest in understanding how the Transportation and Logistics division operates, and how they can tailor their experiences to secure future career success:

“I am excited to learn about the various sectors within the transportation and logistics division, and to gain valuable, hands-on work experience,” says Nada Mahmoud, a fourth-year Civil Engineering student attending the University of New Brunswick.

Nada will be working as an Emergency Response Services Coordinator with RST Sunbury for the summer.

“I’m really excited and humbled to be back again this summer, and really pushing beyond my comfort zone,” adds Darien Edison, a returning student who will be working as a Data Analyst with Atlantic Towing, Limited over the summer. “I want to develop and improve as a future engineer and come out as a better version of myself.”

Darien is entering his third year of Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick.

Hired Before Graduation

In addition to providing valuable summer employment opportunities, theCareers in Motion Program can lead to formal offers of employment for candidates entering their final year of post-secondary studies.

Saquib Shahzad, a recent Civil Engineering Graduate from the University of New Brunswick, was hired before graduation following a CIM term position. He will start his career with JDI as an Associate Engineer with RST Sunbury next month.

“Having secured an opportunity with JDI's Transportation and Logistics Division right after graduation is immensely satisfying, relieving and an achievement I am extremely proud of,” says Shahzad, “The company's significant investment in training and growth of its employees and the wide variety of opportunities available in multiple industries within the organization are two of the many factors that convinced me to begin my career with JDI.”

Bronson Daley also counts himself among the division's CIM alumni, and he began his career with JDI after graduating from Dalhousie University in 2017:

“Careers in Motion helped set me up for success following school by providing me with opportunity,” says Daley, who currently works as Jr. Mechanical Engineer with Atlantic Towing, Limited. “Opportunity to learn, opportunity to network, and opportunity to work on projects I never thought I would.”

A Warm Welcome

"I continue to be amazed at the degree of learning our students are exposed to during their terms, and the positive impacts they have on our businesses," remarks Wayne Power, Group Vice President of Transportation and Logistics. "From working on drydockings to helping digitize our operations, we are providing an opportunity for them to apply their academics while delivering value in a meaningful way.”

Mr. Power has been a visible role model to CIM student cohorts over the years, communicating with the students on a regular basis and running a popular annual student “selfie” contest.

The Transportation and Logistics Division wishes all JDI summer students - new and returning - the very best as they take on new and exciting challenges and develop both personally and professionally.
