Congratulations Envirothon NB Winners!

J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) would like to congratulate the winners and participants of the 15th annual Envirothon NB challenge.  Envirothon is New Brunswick’s largest high school environmental science competition.

The event was hosted by the University of New Brunswick at the Saint John campus on May 24 and 25.

Teams from five high schools were involved:  Stanley High School, Oromocto High School, Harbour View High School, Bernice MacNaughton High School and St. Malachy's Memorial High School.

The students attended workshops conducted by skilled natural resources specialists, combining in-class teaching and hands-on field experience in the areas of forestry, aquatic ecology, wildlife, and soils and land use.

Oromocto High School took the over-all competitive win at this year’s challenge earning the right to represent New Brunswick at the North American Envirothon in Missouri next month.

Stanley High School was named the non-competitive winner scoring first place in four of six workshops that took place over the two-day event.

JDI has been a proud sponsor of Envirothon NB since its inception in 2000. Kelly Honeyman, Chief Naturalist for JDI was recognized at the closing ceremony for his dedication towards the program. “New Brunswick requires forward thinkers that will ensure our region remains sustainable from both an economic and an environmental perspective,” says Kelly Honeyman, Chief Naturalist, JDI. “These Envirothon youth are developing the smarts to come up with practical solutions to environmental issues and they have the passion to carry them through.  I’m proud to see these enlightened students move through the program and make a difference in the future.”
