This past May, high school teams from across New Brunswick competed in the Envirothon NB competition held in Fredericton, NB. For the third year in a row the Stanley High School Buffleheads were the overall champions. The Buffleheads will be heading to Emmitsburg, Maryland, July 23-29th to compete at the international level of the competition. 

“Envirothon has been a great experience and has provided many opportunities to learn about the environment, and make new friends. Being able to compete on both a Provincial and North American level has been a great way to travel and see new places,” says Lesley Spencer, a graduating member. 

500,000 students across North America participate in the competition, making it the largest high school environmental education program in Canada and the US. Only 250 students participate annually at the international level. The competition involves field knowledge challenges covering soil, wildlife, forestry and aquatics. A scenario involving a serious environmental concern is also provided a month in advance, with teams expected to present their proposal during the event. 

“Envirothon not only teaches students about the environment, but it provides a space for them to become accomplished public speakers and comfortable in their own skin. I look forward to watching them represent our province once again at an international level,” says Rebecca Boone, advisor to the Buffleheads.

Last year the Buffleheads competed in Peterborough, Ontario, against teams from all across North American and a team from China, and walked away with 1st place in Invasive Species and 3rd place in the oral competition. They ranked 11th overall out of the 52 international teams.
