The IWK Health Centre's team of dedicated neonatologists and support staff work together every day to care for the Maritime region's most vulnerable patients.

In 2013 KENT made a $500,000 donation to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the IWK Health Centre.  Its redevelopment will result in healthier, happier babies when they leave the IWK.

"This investment is life-changing for these babies in the Maritimes. Thank you Kent!" said Tanya Bishop, Clinical Lead of the NICU Redevelopment at the IWK. "This gift brings the best in neonatal care to these special newborns and their families."

The new NICU will feature private rooms which will allow families to be more involved in their babies’ development.

"These families are going to have privacy and confidentiality. They are going to have enhanced infection prevention; and most importantly, families will get to be with their babies in intensive care," said Bishop. "They will be able to sleep there; they will have a washroom - a private space to be with their newborn.  Most importantly, they will be able to give unlimited hours of skin-to-skin care which is vital to the health and development of the little baby.”

"We are really pleased to be participating in this major renovation to the IWK Neonatal Intensive Care Unit,” said Stew Valcour, Vice President of KENT. “We’re proud to support a health care team that continues to provide world-class care for the Maritimes’ youngest, smallest, and most vulnerable patients."

For over 20 years, KENT has been an active partner of the IWK Balloon Fundraiser.  More recently it has been the title sponsor of the Kent Great Big Dig - an event that has raised over $1.5 million in the past 11 years.

Construction of the new Neonatal unit is planned to begin in the spring of 2015.
