JDI contributes $500,000 to the Jean E.S. Irving YWCA Centre for Women and Children

The Moncton YWCA begins a new chapter with the launch of the TransitionElle capital campaign, a campaign with a goal of raising $1.85 million to complete the Jean E.S. Irving YW Centre for Women and Children in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Robert Irving, Co-CEO of J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI), announced the company’s lead contribution of $500,000 to name the centre in honor of his mother, Mrs. Jean E.S. Irving, citing her long-standing dedication to women and families throughout New Brunswick.

The new centre will be located at 135 Kendra Street in Moncton, near the Mapleton Power Centre. The facility was used as a residence for retired priests for many years, having been just recently purchased by the YWCA. Following renovations that will commence this summer, it will become the new home of the YWCA Moncton offices and a 15-unit residence for young mothers and their children.

“The centre for women and children will really take a comprehensive look at addressing intergenerational poverty,” said Jewell Mitchell, Executive Director, YWCA Moncton. “By providing housing and childcare, it is tackling those barriers that young women face for economic success. The fact that they can stay here for up to five years will really allow them to put down roots and get on a solid education path which will lead to their long-term success.”

Robert Irving acknowledged the importance of the work done by the YWCA: “The company recognizes the YWCA’s contribution to society and the funds will help the agency in assisting women in need for decades to come.”

Irving also expressed his gratitude in having the centre named after his mother, Jean Elizabeth Saunders Irving, stating that she  always had a deep respect for the YWCA’s dedication to improving the lives of women and their families.

The YWCA has been an important partner to JDI in the continued effort to grow strong communities. JDI would like to congratulate the Moncton YWCA on the launch of this new project and thank them for the work they have done to build a foundation for women and children in the city of Moncton.
