JDI Releases Sustainability Reports for Forestry and Forest Products Operations


J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) has released its 2016 Sustainability Report for its Forestry and Forest Products Operations.

The company's sustainability framework consists of five focus areas: 
1. Healthy environment
2. Growing and engaging people
3. Vibrant communities
4. Strong partnerships for business success
5. Safe and efficient operations

All Forest Products Operations Summary

Healthy Environment

  • Today’s JDI forestry and forest products operations will absorb more than we emit over the next 50 years. Planting almost 1 billion trees, and reducing emissions at our manufacturing sites means we will absorb 92 million tonnes of CO2 - equal to 360,000 cars off the road per year for the next 50 years.
  • 58% green energy use from renewable fuels like biomass.
  • 23% reduction in green house gas emissions over the past 3 years. 
  • 30% reduction in sulphur dioxide (SO²) air emissions over the past 3 years.
  • 1,277 Conservation Sites, a 3.5% increase since 2015 as part of our voluntary Unique Areas program in Canada and the U.S.
  • 55% waste to landfill was diverted for beneficial use.
  • Zero non-compliance issues following 3rd party forest certification audits in 2016, based on 145 indicators (environmental, social and economic) measured over 5 years.
  • $25 million invested in forest research since 1982. 
  • 5.9% overall reduction in Recordable Incident Rate (RIR) over the past three years.
  • Over 27,000 km of buffers to protect water courses (3 times the width of Canada).
  • 17,157,145 trees planted in 2016 - nearly 1 billion since 1957!

Vibrant Communities 

  • Over $250,000 per year in scholarships given to talented students attending university or community college.
  • Over 65,000 employee volunteer hours in support of PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools).

Growing & Engaging People

  • 512 new employees in 2016.
  • 4,343 direct employees.
  • 29% women in executive positions.

Strong Partnerships for Business Success

  • Record breaking wood purchases from private NB Woodlot Owners and Producers. (2016-2017 season).
  • 28% of JDI's wood supply comes from private woodlot owners and producers.

Every year the land JDI owns or manages in Canada and the U.S. are subject to third party audit by scientific experts from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®).


In Maine, our woodlands are also certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C041515). Following a 3rd party forest certification audit in 2016, JDI had zero non-compliances based on 145 indicators (environmental, social and economic) measured over 5 years.
