Launching SLAB - Wood from the Hood

Grannan Street is home to many celebrations around innovation, art, and community. On Thursday, November 17, all three elements were present for the launch of SLAB – Wood from the Hood.

SLAB is a collaboration between Judith Mackin, owner of TUCK Studio, J.D. Irving, Limited and JMN Enterprises Inc. Before over 300 people came to take in the new product, we spoke to collaborators Judith Mackin, Phil Martin, and Jean-Francois Landry about the project.

"We're introducing a beautiful New Brunswick furniture collection," said Judith Mackin, "and when I say New Brunswick, I mean everything New Brunswick."

SLAB includes custom tables, benches, seats, stools, coffee tables and end tables, and more. The trees used for SLAB are mature ash, birch, and maple trees grown in New Brunswick from woodlands certified under the international Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®).

"I facilitated the conversation between Judith and JMN because I knew they were the ones who were going to do the work of transforming the wood into beautiful pieces of furniture,” said Phil Martin, Retail Merchandising Manager.

Once cut, the slabs are subject to a careful kiln drying process and then finished by the team at JMN ENTERPRISES INC. in northern New Brunswick.
