Sea-ing Diverse Career Opportunities: Proud Partnership with Nova Scotia Community College

Growing up on the Mira River in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Kelsie MacLean knew she’d have a career on the water. “My grandfather fished and I was part of Sea Cadets. I wanted to be a Sea Captain,” Kelsie said.

A trip to Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) in Port Hawkesbury changed Kelsie’s perspective, “We got to test drive both the Marine Engineering and the Marine Navigation programs. It was then I realized I would way rather be in the engine room getting dirty than sitting up in the wheelhouse.”

Kelsie’s first job with Atlantic Towing was offshore Newfoundland and Labrador aboard the Atlantic Kingfisher. “After my Cadetship work-term, I went back to school for another year. A few days before I graduated, I had a job offer from Atlantic Towing.”

NSCC's Academic Chair of the Nautical Institute, Vivek Saxena, expresses pride in the longstanding partnership with the school and employer Atlantic Towing. “We’re so pleased to have excellent industry partners like Atlantic Towing. Our employers are such incredible supporters of NSCC’s Nautical Institute students – helping them bridge from the classroom into real-world training on their vessels. We’ve been working with Atlantic Towing for 20 years and have seen so many of our students move from work term placements to real employment.”

Ryan MacMaster has seen a lot of change in his career with Atlantic Towing. “There is lots of opportunity for a dynamic career. Look at myself. I started out as a cadet from NSCC, I’ve worked multiple jobs in the office and now I’m a Training Coordinator,” Ryan said. “We have such a robust training program here. One of the most rewarding things for me is to see someone grow from being a cadet to a new hire to supporting them through their Master’s ticket.”

Bill Pasch, Director of Human Resources with Atlantic Towing said he’s proud to have 32 NSCC grads as part of the Atlantic Towing team. “We're proud to be NSCC's biggest partner around cadet placements. It’s a great opportunity for cadets to get hands on work experience. It’s also a great opportunity for us to help keep people working close to home.”

In the next three years (2018-2020) Atlantic Towing forecasts welcoming over 170 to the team, including over 100 students jobs. Explore your options and apply online: careers.jdirving.com
