Shawna Atkinson grew up watching her father operating heavy equipment, and saw no reason she couldn't do the same. Shawna is a loader operator at Sproule Lumber outside Truro, Nova Scotia. She's been working throughout the mill and yard for over ten years now. Being a female in a male dominated industry never slowed her down and she says attributes her success to having a great support system, both at home and at work. 

Forestry has been in her family for several generations. Her grandfather ran the grapple loader in Sussex and her father, Dave, has been with the Woodlands Division for nearly 40 years. In addition, both her mother and sister spent nearly a decade in the Sproule Planer mill.
