More than 250,000 students attend Take Our Kids to Work Day at 75,000 organizations across Canada. Gaining exposure to the workforce gives students a head-start on career development.

“It’s never too early to start thinking about what you’re going to do as a career. This is an opportunity for high school students to experience what it is like to work at JDI,” said Shannon Levy, Senior Business Analyst IT, J.D. Irving, Limited who brought his son, Cameron to work with him.

“I got to see what my dad does for a living, and that was really interesting. It was neat to see the role my dad plays in JDI.” said Cameron.

This year, J.D. Irving, Limited had over 100 students attend Take Our Kids to Work Day with their parents/guardians across all divisions. Students were given an overview of the company and a resume-building workshop before job shadowing for the afternoon.

“Hopefully we made some impact on the students around the importance of resume building, volunteering within your community, and being motivated for their first job,” said Sacha Bustin, Human Resources Business Partner, J.D. Irving, Limited. “We talked to the students about the amount of high school and co-op students that we’ve brought on in the past as well as converting people into full-time positions in all areas of the business to try to give them insight on what they might be looking for in post-secondary education.”

Not only do the students benefit, but the organization benefits as well. Every year, JDI hires over 600 students, more than 150 of which are paid co-op students from universities and colleges. Take Our Kids to Work Day is a great way to show the future workforce the opportunities available within J.D. Irving, Limited.

Over the next two years JDI is looking to hire over 4,700 new team members for its diverse operations across Canada and in the US. Interested?
