Thank You Winter-term Co-op Students
This past winter (January-April), J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) welcomed 82 students across our divisions including Information Technology, Finance & Accounting, Irving Pulp & Paper, Irving Shipbuilding, Transportation and Logistics, and Human Resources.
Josh McIntyre, marketing student at the University of New Brunswick, worked as the social media administrator. Josh says developing content and interacting with social media followers were highlights of his co-op placement. "Through the JDI social media channels, I got to speak with a lot of different people from around the world. Being so early in my career and being able to help others further their careers was such a rewarding aspect of my role."
Students this term joined us from the following post-secondary institutions:
- Dalhousie University
- Mount Saint Vincent University
- Nova Scotia Community College
- Université de Moncton
- University of New Brunswick Saint John
- University of New Brunswick Fredericton
- University of Waterloo
- New Brunswick Community College
- Memorial University of Newfoundland
- Marine Institue
- Eastern College
- College of the North Atlantic
Over their terms, students had the opportunity to learn about the various JDI businesses through tours of the operations, VP roundtables, and co-op networking events. Through student work terms, JDI provides students with the opportunity to gain rewarding, hands-on experience
Kayla Jackman, a member of the Field Service Engineering team at Irving Shipbuilding, is one of the many students who joined our operations this term. Kayla is studying Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering at Memorial University and enjoyed the hands-on experience while working at the Shipyard, "During my work term, I was encouraged to take on challenging issues and to work harder which made me feel like my work completed here was of importance, while also further developing my problem solving skills, and general knowledge in my field of study."
Kayla was also involved as a mentor at the WISE Science Retreat Sponsored by JDI (https://jdirving.com/BlogPage.aspx?id=4048&blogid=74) and looks forward to continuing to inspire girls to enroll in engineering. "Overall, my four-month placement with Irving Shipbuilding has been filled with valuable learning experiences and has been a great insight into the engineering profession. I feel the experience I gained here is one-of-a-kind and I will take what I've learned here with me throughout my future career"
We would like to thank our winter co-op students for your dedication and drive during your work terms. We wish you all the best in your continued studies and look forward to the great things you will accomplish!
In 2017, we forecast welcoming 650 students across our operations. www.students.jdirving.com
