La Dune de Bouctouche Hosts Annual Hike
December 1, 2017
Although summer at La Dune de Bouctouche has come to an end, the park has managed to have one of the best years since opening. This summer, nearly 129,000 guests came to see what the Dune and Irving Eco-Centre have to offer.
On top of having a banner year, this year’s Walk the Full Dune had one of the largest turnouts in its 9 year history! At the end of every season, guests are invited to hike the 12km of the Bouctouche Dune. Hikers are driven to a local wharf where they board a boat to take them to the very tip of the Dune. The group of 152 participants included over 12 individuals over the age of 70, and one five year old.
“It is always a pleasure for me to see the enthusiasm of the participants to make this challenge and share their experience” said Joanne Jaillet, Site Manager at La Dune.
The sand dune stretches 12 kilometres across the Bouctouche Bay, a result of the constant action of wind, tides, and sea currents since the last Ice Age. And with every major storm, the dune’s shape continues to change. A rich variety of marine and aquatic plants and animals, specifically shorebirds and other migratory birds, have made the dune their home.
“It was really pleasant! Well organized. Finishing the run at the Eco-Centre is great, thanks for letting me participate!” said Natalie Dickson, participant.
